Halloween DIY

I am addicted to Pinterest.  If you follow me on Pinterest, you will know that this is not an exaggeration.  I pin.  A lot. And what better time of year is there for Pinterest than Halloween?

I’ve always had a problem with Halloween decorations.  I never had a few hundred dollars to spend making things look really nice, but I didn’t want just a bunch of convenience store junk lying all around.

Add to that this little one who would destroy any table top decorations I could imagine, and it left me with a pretty bleak Halloween setup.

But then came Pinterest, and all that changed.

One of my favorite things about Pinterest is that it just makes you feel creativeWhen I’m tired and uninspired and just really don’t want to do much of anything, I can grab my Pinterest app, pin a few things, and all of a sudden feel creative.  Completing the projects never really seems to be important for increasing my feelings of creativity.  Just looking at them is usually enough.

But today I wanted more.  I spent a good hour and a half looking through pinned Halloween themes, and I came up with some awesome ideas.  And the best part — it all cost me under $10!

One of my favorite parts is the area above my television.  One of my great sadnesses about my home is that I don’t have a fireplace.  If I had a fireplace, I’m sure we would never actually start a fire.  I don’t care about that.  I just want the mantel.  Because you can do all sorts of gorgeous things with a mantel.  But this little area above my television for whatever reason kind of fills that void for me.

I can’t get any great pictures of the little picture frames because they are too high, but the one has black card stock with a picture of a spider and the other has the same card stock with a picture of a witch’s cauldron.  Those two frames have been there for a year or two now, and they have the words “Believe” and “Faith” as well as their counterparts written in Chinese lettering.  I never liked them all that much, but I bought them because the colors matched my room.  I love them now though that I have my Halloween theme set up in there.  And obviously, those are black bats made out of construction paper hanging on the mirror.

Also in the living room, I decorated our lamp shades.  I had wanted to put the paper under the shade and have the picture shine through when the light was on, but a) I worried that was a fire hazard, and b) they wouldn’t stick inside.  So instead I put them outside.  I love what they look like, but so does my cat, so I fear these won’t last all that long.  Oops — one just fell now!  I think I’ll have to find some more sturdy tape.I had never planned on decorating my powder room, but then I got a few ideas, and I decided to go for it.  First, I put some more bats on this mirror.  It’s hard to see with the lighting, but it looks really good with the black lights.

Then I printed a spooky picture from the web and put it in a frame that I already had hanging in there.

And finally, I created some hands to hold the toilet paper.  This idea is all over Pinterest, and honestly, it’s not my favorite part, but I have a second motive for completing this project — I’m hoping it will scare the Goose away from the toilet paper so I don’t have to keep spending time rerolling it all back up.  She’s not afraid of much, so I fear it won’t work.

And this next part was really an after thought.  I bought these frames at Michaels a couple of years ago, but I never knew what to do with them, so sadly enough, they have been hanging there for awhile with the original template pictures in them.  I fixed this really easily with some downloaded clip art letters and some orange ribbon.  I’m excited to do similar projects with these frames during other holidays.

And finally, I thought I would share our new holiday book basket.  I bought this at Michaels and attached some orange ribbon to it, and I put all of our Halloween books in it.  I wanted to write something corny on it like “BOOks” but then I realized that since it is green, it will work very well (with different ribbon) for both Christmas and St Patrick’s Day books, so sadly, I don’t have any corny puns.  Although if I get up the gumption to cut out some felt letters, that may change…

Anyway, that’s half of our Halloween decor.  The other half Magoo made and is VERY proud of.  She has been jumping around all day.  Our biggest project with her isn’t completed yet, so I will post all of her hard work once it is completed.

I really was surprised at how easy and cheap all of this was, and it looks really cool.  I would urge you to take some time and see what you can create for your home.  I have absolutely zero artistic ability, so if I can do it, anyone can!
