Fire and Rain

More so than almost anything in this universe, words can make me cry.

It has been a long year.  A very long year.  And it’s only February.  That’s not to say it has all been bad — the blessing of our little Mae is one of the highlights of my life.  But still, the roller coaster that was January has left my head spinning and my legs unable to find balance on the ground.

And it was with that mindset that I found myself listening to a cover of James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain.”  And it brought me back to the magic of words.

If I could have a talent in this world, it would be to be able to write like that.  To take human experience and distill it down to such simple and yet universally true words.  Because who can listen to those lyrics and not hear their own story told throughout?

That’s the magic of the written word.  It’s what binds us all and lets us know that we are not alone no matter how distant everyone might seem.

And that’s about all I have to say tonight because unlike James Taylor, I don’t have that golden pen.  But I will leave you with Brooke White’s cover of his song.
