Valentine’s Crafts for Kids

I love crafting for Valentine’s Day.  Like love, love, love it.  I think it’s because it’s really hard to even make Valentine’s Day decorations classy, so I take it as open season to do whatever it is that I please regardless of the overall aesthetic appeal.  And I love pink and red and I love hearts, and they both serve well as distractions from the bleak weather of winter.  It’s all the perfect excuse to get out yarn, fabric, paint, and glue!

Last year, I made some of my favorite V Day decorations.  I made multiple different buntings and wreaths.  Unfortunately, the box containing said decorations is about the only one I can’t find yet.  What I did find was a box with some of our store bought decorations, and they had been eaten through and pooped on by the lovely vermin that used to live in our old garage.

So it was time to create anew!

The first thing we made were these hearts for one of our front windows.  It’s a huge window in a room that’s currently pretty much empty, so I thought it was just screaming for some Valentines fun.

They were very easy to make.  First we dug out some of the coffee filters we had left over from our pre-Keurig days, and then I let the girls have at them with pink and red paint.

I made some myself, but I must say that the girls’ turned out better.  I had all even strokes that showed up as such on the finished product.  They just painted all over willy-nilly and it ended up looking almost tie-dyed when they were done.

Then we let them dry overnight.

In the morning, I cut out a heart template from a piece of cardboard, and Magoo and I went about cutting heart shapes out of the coffee filters.

I’m really happy with the end result although it’s very difficult to get a good picture of them because of the backlighting.  It makes me happy when I’m driving home and I see them from my car window as I’m pulling up.

Since we already had the paint out, we took about about 6 toilet paper rolls that we had been collecting, and I let the girls paint them so we could turn them into some garland for the living room.

At this stage, you’ll be happy if you have a messy old table like I do that you don’t have to worry about ruining.

I found a tutorial for this garland online here, and it’s super easy to follow.

And finally, we have our last two pieces.IMG_5386

This was a piece Magoo made a few days ago.  We glued small pieces of tissue paper to plastic wrap and then we covered it with a second piece of wrap.  Then we cut out the heart shape and taped the ends together.  I can’t say this is my favorite because for whatever reason it doesn’t catch the light too well, but it’s still a nice site to see as we enter our house each day.

And finally there’s my crochet garland which I will probably include in my Etsy shop next Valentine’s Day if I ever muster up the courage to actually open the shop!

So as you can see, we’e been quite busy the last week.  Every time I think I’ve finally cleaned off all of the paint, I’ll find some on the back of my elbow or in Goosie’s hair.  But it was worth it because we finally have some holiday spirit in our house.  As Magoo says, “This house is looking so heartful!”

And maybe by some miracle, we’ll find that box of rogue bunting so I can share that with you next week!
