Be Little

The other day as we were driving around, Magoo asked me if she will know everything I know when she is a grown up.

“Yes,” I said.

You will know how to spell all of the hard words, and you will know what number comes after 110.

You’ll know why snow falls from the sky and how to fold paper into the perfect accordion fan.

You will know how many months until your birthday, and you will know how babies get into mommy’s bellies.

But you’ll also know why sometimes grown ups cry.

And you’ll know that not all people are nice and that not all children are safe.

You’ll know the truth about Santa Claus and hunger, war and desperation.

So for now, Magoo, let’s just be happy that you know what you know.  As you grow, I’ll fill in the gaps and the world will teach you its lessons.

But tonight, close your eyes knowing the only thing you really ever need to know — you are deeply and forever loved.
