Attention Captain Obvious

Today I learned a lesson, and yes, this is another lesson that I usually need to learn weekly if not daily.  So brace yourself… this is going to be good.

If I spend time doing things I value, I feel like my life is valuable.  If I spend time wasting time, I feel like I’m wasting my life away.

So sure, this is nothing new and mind blowing, but I wonder how differently people would view their lives if they committed to really remembering this principle.  It would be hard at the end of the day to feel like you wasted the day if you didn’t.

Now I’m always hesitant to go too far because I do have tendencies towards workaholicalism.  But that’s not what I’m advocating.  In fact, I think if we spent all of our time working, we would be pretty miserable.  I’m not merely getting at productivity.  I’m talking about value.

And so tomorrow I will remember that.  Really, I will.  Before I engage in an activity (particularly one involving email, Facebook, or my iPhone, I will ask myself what I am trying to achieve with it.  And if I am happy with the answer, I will go for it.

I want to be able to look at my days and be proud of how they were spent.  We only have so much time we are given, but what matters isn’t so much what we are given but rather what we make of it.
